Encyclia has been separate from the Epidendrum since 1961 thanks to the work of Robert L. Dressler on orchids. 172 species originating in Central America and found from sea level up to 2000 metres above sea level.
Epidendrum contains 1000 species, commonly referred to as epidendrons, originating in tropical and semitropical America (from Florida to Argentina), the species of the genus Epidendrum are very varied both in size and appearance. These species can be lithophyte or terrestrial epiphyte. Great lovers of light some even tolerate full sun.
